Pacific Cod Fishing in Ketchikan in May and June

2026 Early Summer Guide by Captain Lukas of Ketchikan's Finest Fishing Charters

After more than two decades guiding professionally in Alaska, Fiji, Florida, Hawaii, and the Bahamas, I still say the most underrated fishery in Southeast Alaska is Pacific cod — especially in early summer.

Pacific cod fishing in Ketchikan in May and June is steady, no-pressure, and one of the few chances anywhere in Alaska to catch as much as you’d like to take home. It’s fast, fun, family-friendly, and perfect for anglers who want action instead of waiting.

If you’re planning an early summer Alaska fishing trip, or you’ll be visiting Ketchikan in June or May by cruise ship, this is the window you want.

Why Cod is the Hidden Gem of Ketchikan

Cod doesn’t get the spotlight like halibut or salmon, but in May and June, it’s one of the most rewarding and consistent fisheries we run. Schools are heavy, the bite is aggressive, and the action rarely slows.

Cod hold tight to structure:

  • soft bottom humps

  • gravel and sand flats

  • mixed mud edges

  • anywhere bait stacks near the floor

When the sonar paints thick clouds near bottom, we drop jigs and it’s game on. Most days it’s drop-hook-reel-repeat. It’s addictive and unbelievably fun.

How We Target Cod in Early Summer

I keep cod fishing simple because that’s what makes it so enjoyable. Light tackle, good movement, fresh bait, and the right bottom structure.

Typical setup:

  • light-action rods for more sensitivity and fun

  • fast-pitch or flutter jigs for reaction strikes

  • herring strips for scent and steady hookups

Drop to bottom, reel up a couple feet, and jig. That’s really it. The feedback is instant, and even first-time guests find success quickly.

May and June: The Peak Window

If you ask for the best month to fish cod in Ketchikan, the answer is early summer without question.

MonthWhat Makes It Great
Maycooler water, hungry post-winter schools, high action
Junepeak biomass, heavy volume, nonstop jig bites

Freezer-filling cod trips in May and June are reliable, consistent, and ideal for anyone who wants to take wild Alaska seafood home. Halibut is also strong during these months, making this a prime early-season multi-species opportunity.

Cod in the Kitchen

If you haven’t tasted fresh Pacific cod, it’ll surprise you. The meat is white and mild, flaky but still firm enough to fry, grill, bake, or turn into chowder. It also holds more moisture than halibut thanks to higher natural oil content, meaning it stays juicy instead of drying out.

I’ve had guests tell me they like cod better than halibut. I don’t argue! Check out some of my favorite recipes for fish here.

No Retention Limit

This is where cod stands apart. There is no retention limit on Pacific cod in our Ketchikan fishery. If you want to fill your freezer, this is the trip where it happens. A few hours of jigging can turn into months of meals if you’re ready for it.

When professionally processed, vacuum-sealed, and frozen, cod stores beautifully and tastes the same months later. Learn more about how we ship your fish home from Ketchikan here.

Perfect for Families and First-Time Anglers

Light gear, quick learning curve, and nonstop action makes this fishery perfect for all ages. Kids stay engaged, adults stack fish quickly, and seasoned anglers appreciate the volume and pace. Cod just makes people happy.

If you’re planning sightseeing in May/June, shore excursions in early summer, wildlife tours, or cruise activities, cod is the ideal add-on. It’s hands-on. It’s memorable. And you leave with something real to take home.
