The Best Month for Salmon Fishing in Ketchikan: Why July Is Alaska’s Peak Fishing Season

By Captain Lukas, Owner & Head Captain, Ketchikan’s Finest Fishing Charters

QUICK ANSWER

If you’re planning one salmon fishing trip to Alaska, July is widely considered the best month for salmon fishing in Ketchikan. Peak salmon runs, long daylight hours, incredible wildlife, and the chance to catch multiple salmon species make July the top choice for both first-time visitors and experienced anglers.

While every month offers something unique, July consistently provides the best overall Alaska fishing experience.

Why July Is the Best Month for Salmon Fishing in Ketchikan

One of the questions I hear most often is: “Captain Lukas, when’s the best time to come fishing?” After spending thousands of hours on the waters surrounding Ketchikan, my answer is usually the same.

If you can choose one month, come in July.

That doesn’t mean June, August, or September aren’t great months. They absolutely are. But July is when everything comes together.

Salmon runs are at their peak, wildlife is everywhere, and the long summer days give us more time to enjoy the water. Whether you’re an experienced angler or catching your very first salmon, July offers the best combination of opportunity and adventure.

Every trip is different, and that’s what keeps me excited to head out each morning.

Why Ketchikan Is One of Alaska's Best Fishing Destinations

Ketchikan sits at the southern entrance to Alaska’s Inside Passage and in the Tongass National Rainforest, directly along one of the most important migration routes for Pacific salmon. Every summer, millions of salmon return from the Pacific Ocean to the rivers where they were born, and many pass through the waters we fish every day.

One of the biggest advantages of fishing in Ketchikan is proximity. Unlike some destinations that require long runs offshore, many of our most productive fishing grounds are just minutes from the harbor. That means more time fishing and less time traveling—especially valuable if you’re visiting on an Alaska cruise.

Because we’re on the water nearly every day during the season, we’re constantly adapting to changing tides, bait movement, and fish activity to put our guests in the best possible position for success.

What Can You Catch in July?

One of the reasons July stands out is the incredible variety of fish moving through Ketchikan’s waters.

Depending on the timing of the runs, anglers may have the opportunity to catch:

  • King (Chinook) Salmon – Alaska’s largest and most sought-after salmon.
  • Silver (Coho) Salmon – Known for aggressive strikes and exciting fights.
  • Pink Salmon – Abundant during even-numbered years and perfect for families.
  • Chum Salmon – Powerful fish that often surprise anglers with their strength.
  • Sockeye Salmon – Highly prized for their rich flavor when conditions allow.

It’s this variety that makes July so special. Every day on the water can be different, and you never know what the next rod to bend will bring.

More Than Just Great Fishing

People book a charter expecting to catch fish…. what they often don’t expect is everything else they’ll experience.

On almost every trip we see something memorable—humpback whales feeding nearby, bald eagles soaring overhead, harbor seals swimming alongside the boat, or sea lions relaxing on rocky outcroppings. Add in snow-capped mountains, waterfalls cascading into the ocean, and the quiet beauty of Southeast Alaska, and the day becomes about much more than filling a cooler.

That’s one of my favorite parts of guiding… you’re not just going fishing.

You’re experiencing Alaska at its very best.

Half-Day vs. Full-Day Fishing Charters

One of the biggest decisions guests make is choosing between a half-day and full-day charter.

Half-Day Charters

If you’re visiting Ketchikan on a cruise ship, a 3-5 hour half-day charter is an excellent option.

Because our fishing grounds are so close, you’ll spend more time fishing and still have plenty of time to return to your ship comfortably.

For many cruise guests, it’s the highlight of their Alaska vacation.

Full-Day Charters

If fishing is the main reason you’re coming to Alaska, a full-day 8-10 hour trip offers the ultimate experience.

With more time on the water, we can adjust our plan based on tides, weather, and fish activity while exploring additional fishing areas throughout the day. It isn’t just about catching more fish. It’s about experiencing more of Southeast Alaska.
